Artist's Comments
The bell tower is the "clock" of campus, chiming every 15 minutes (meanwhile, to determine when classes are over, we have a giant steam whistle that can be heard for miles around--darn! should've got a picture of that). Also, there is a Major/Minor program for playing the bells. Sometimes on campus, you can hear people playing a piece on it.
The campanile bell tower also serves as a gateway for graduates at commencement. Everyone who graduates walks through the passage at the bottom of the tower, and then everyone marches in a big line to the stadium, where graduation takes place.
